SDSU splits weekend games in Chicago

After a tough loss to Kansas in four sets this past Friday, the San Diego State volleyball redeemed itself on Saturday by earning a victory against the host team on Saturday at the DePaul Invitational in Chicago.

SDSU made the first set look easy, taking it with a score of 25-14.

There were multiple kills during this set, which were difficult for the DePaul ladies to respond to.

Sophomore outside hitter Summer Nash and junior middle blocker Andrea Hannasch led SDSU each with nine kills, making it almost impossible for DePaul to secure the extra points needed.

SDSU then proceeded to take a six-point lead in the second set at 12-6, which the Blue Demons never came close to touching throughout the set.

Hannasch, Nash, and sophomore outside hitter Raegan Shelton each helped the Aztec cause during this set, defeating DePaul with ease 25-14.

The Blue Demons looked like they had some promise during the third set, only trailing behind the Aztecs 10-9 at the start.

However, with sophomore setter Johnna Fouch averaging 12.3 assists and 2.60 digs per set, and sophomore middle blocker Emily Harris knocking down four kills and two blocks in the third set alone, it wasn’t likely DePaul was going to make a comeback against the SDSU ladies.

The final set ended up being the closest in score, ending 25-19.

During the nightcap, the Aztecs lost to Valparaiso three sets to none.

All three sets were close. 25-21, 25-23. 25-22, but they all went the Crusaders way.

The loss left SDSU with a split on Saturday.

At the end of the weekend, Fouch was named to the all-tournament team.

This is the second straight all-tournament award for Fouch, who also received the all-tournament award at the recent Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic in New Orleans.

The win against DePaul set the team’s overall season record to 5-3.

The Aztecs will host Cal State Fullerton in their next match at 6 p.m. tomorrow on Aztec Court in the Peterson Gym.

This will be the last game before their anticipated Mountain West season games begin.
