Recently, sports staff writer Carlos Manzanillo sat down withwomen’s soccer defender Lyn Splittgerber. Here’s what she had to say.

DailyAztec: When did you first start kicking the ball around and startplaying soccer?

Lyn Splittgerber: I started playing soccer at the age ofseven, which is really old compared to some of the other people whostarted at like five.

DA: Were you good from the very beginning?

LS: I guess I would say I was good. I don’t know. It wasjust different at that age. I play defense now, when I was younger Iplayed forward and all I had to do was kick the ball down the fieldand run after it.

DA: What made you choose to play soccer at SDSU?

LS: Good things were happening. They were building the Sportsdeckand the team was doing really well. The girls were really nice when Icame and visited. It is also nice to play in your home town and havefamily 20 minutes away so they can come to my games. It all just kindof fit together.

DA: What do you think of the new WUSA women’s soccerleague?

LS: I think it’s awesome. I think it’s great. I think it shouldhave happened a long time ago. It’s nice to see that girls finallyhave an opportunity to play professionally. They have the WNBA, butfinally soccer has come around. I think it has become more popularthan boy’s soccer (MLS).

DA: There was not a WUSA around when you were growing up.Who where some of your sports heroes?

LS: John Elway.

DA: John Elway?

LS: My dad was a Denver Broncos fan.

DA: Who else?

LS: Michael Jordan, of course, and Mia Hamm.

DA: Sounds like a bad Gatorade commercial. Are you happy tosee MJ back?

LS: Oh yeah. Are you a big Jordan fan?

DA: No. I’m still upset that they beat the Lakers in 1991.

DA: Currently, who is your favorite athlete?

LS: I would have to say Tiger Woods, even though it hasnothing to do with soccer. He is very calm and sure of himself. Healways believes that he can win.

DA: Big golf fan?

LS: No, but my boyfriend is.

DA: What is your favorite type of music?

LS: I don’t really have a favorite. I like everything. Ilike country, rap, alternative.

DA: What was the last concert that you attended?

LS: I went to a country concert. Brooks and Dunn.

DA: Did you get dressed up? Cowboy boots, cowboy hat?Wranglers?

LS: No. I wanted to, but I don’t have any of that stuff.

DA: Answer the age-old question, Backstreet or ‘N Sync?

LS: ‘N Sync, of course.

DA: What do you plan to do after graduating?

LS: I’m probably going to go back to school and major infilm.

DA: Speaking of film, what is your favorite movie aboutsoccer?

LS: Ladybugs.

DA: I think that’s the only one.

DA: Who is your closest friend on the team?

LS: I would have to say Kim Blevins. She is new to theteam, but we played club soccer together.

DA: Give me some dirt about her?

LS: No, I can’t say (laughing).
