VEGITATION

Vegitation is not only the foliage growing in your backyard. The San Diego native roots reggae band originating in Ocean Beach has derived its name from the green stuff that not only feeds your appetite, but that also makes you a little buzzed. But it wasn’t all fun and games for this revolution-inspiring group. It has worked hard and delivered funky beats to the chilled-out citizens of San Diego for the past seven years.

Without sounding too cliche, Vegitation has called it quits as of this month via blog on its MySpace account. The seven members consisted of: Dandelion singing lead vocals, Ishmael “The Peacemaker” Sealy, Mason Boogie giving his all with his rhythm guitar, Mike Lockrem rocking bass guitar, Jamie Thibodeau maintaining the percussion, Japheth Ketcham on lead guitar and Arturo Salido rocking out with his keyboards.

These seven members formed in 2002, with the exception of Ishmael “The Peacemaker” Sealy, who replaced original drummer Ed Fletcher this year, and had a vision to bring a worldwide message of peace and love. They enlisted to “make life better” for the citizens of the world.

Starting small, they secured a recurring gig at well-known hippy hangout Winston’s in Ocean Beach. Vegitation gained a strong fan base, enough so to be nominated three times for “Best World Music Group” at the San Diego Music Awards.

Though it never took home the gold, Vegitation continued to travel the world, spreading peaceful music.

Vegitation released four album-length CDs, its debut being “From The Garden.” Its signature sound incorporated the core reggae beats with blues and classic rock influences. It also names a laundry list of influences such as The Beatles, Peter Tosh, Sade, Johnny Cash and Dire Straits.

If you never saw Vegitation live, then you missed out on an experience.
The band included the audience in its set, making each guest feel they were at an intimate house party. The artists held their own on stage with the likes of The Wailers, Cake, Ozomatli, Eek-A-Mouse and The Skatalites.

A San Diego legend, Vegitation will be missed as one of San Diego’s leading reggae performers.

For whatever reason these men have chosen to disband, the community hopes that it’s not because “the system has a chokehold on your soul.” Peace and love.ision to bring a worldwide message of peace and love. They enlisted to “make life better” for the citizens of the world.
