You must stop hateful ignorance

No one has been able to escape the political insanity encircling country and our communities throughout the recent months. With the presidential and mayoral elections, anti-gay activism and foot-in-mouth politicians with less-than-correct medical advice for women, there is plenty of news to stew on these days.

How exactly does one complete a sentence with the words “legitimate” and “rape?” And when referring to the sexual preference of a complete stranger, what gives anyone the right to determine what is right and what is wrong? When did religious dogma become the basis for everything – especially in government?

Ignorance is not bliss, people. It is time to start opening your minds and learning new things, meeting new kinds of people and accepting that each and every one of us is different. We are in a world that is ever-changing. Nothing is the same as it was yesterday, and it won’t remain the same tomorrow. There is nothing impressive about boycotting military funerals or bullying homosexuals because you don’t believe in what someone else does.

What kind of world are we creating with this hatred and bigotry? What kind of children will rule our country in the next generation? This is a century of technological advances and new medicine, and yet our collaborative minds are stuck in old worldthinking.

Shouldn’t we be beyond the immaturity of prejudice: Prejudice against women, prejudice against gays and lesbians, prejudice against people with tattoos or those of different social classes. We are all people, people! Start acting like it.

We are in an economic depression and a potential political disaster that only we the people can pull ourselves out of, but we’re too busy hating on the two dudes who want to raise a child together and the rape victim who doesn’t want to have a stranger’s baby.

Ignorance is not bliss. Shifting our focus onto unimportant issues to avoid dealing with our real problems is not the solution. We must take the blinders and start being a part of the solution. It’s time to deal with reality.

Women and homosexuals are a part of this country. They’re in our communities, they’re a part of our governments and for all we know, we could have a gay, female president who rocks the socks off of every heterosexual male we had before her.

I hope every gay-bashing, woman-hating, rape-supporting imbecile out there bears a child who falls in love with someone of their own gender and becomes an impactful part of our society, doing things their parents could never do with the misinformed, closed-minded attitudes they so strongly defended. Nothing would anger these people more than realizing none of this is within their control, and it never was.

This is a generation of new norms, wider acceptance and change. Homelessness, cost of living, poverty and unemployment have all increased, yet, we are focused on who our neighbor loves and the very personal choices of the gender that amounts for more than half of our population.

It’s time to get a grip and bring our focus back to the things that matter. If our generation doesn’t do it, who will?
