A cheeseburger salad, Pop Rocks milkshake, beer with liquor … No, I haven’t transcribed your dreams; I’ve just shared a few of the items from the brand new menu at Slater’s 50/50.

This tasty dreamland is located in Liberty Station and has already developed a San Diego following after only a few years.

Owner Scott Slater and Executive Chef Brad Lyons, both San Diego State alumni, play with their food to challenge traditional ingredient pairings.

Take it from a girl who usually abstains from India pale ale— the new IPA cocktails at Slater’s is an appreciated addition to the drink menu. A standout is the Elementary School Teacher beer cocktail, which contains Amaretto, apple juice, lemon juice, syrup and India pale ale. Don’t be fooled by the name—this “teacher” will not help you study. It’s deceptively sweet and tasty, making it dangerously easy to drink.

At first glance, dishes from the new menu seem incomprehensible. However, the taste speaks for itself.

Bacon lovers, I’ve found your new sanctuary. Lyons admits being “solely responsible for the (national) bacon shortage going on in every single aspect of the menu.” He’s not kidding. “Parks and Recreation” character Ron Swanson would have no trouble getting all the bacon and eggs he could want here at Slater’s. Well, at least the bacon part.

Looking for a new guilty pleasure? The popular new appetizer, Fried Bacon Mac & Cheese Balls, is highly addictive. This menu item has the best of both worlds. While crispy on the outside, its cheesiness on the inside and hint of bacon will have bacon connoisseurs reaching for another before the first is finished. Try a dipping sauce to heighten the experience.

Did I mention there’s bacon?

Good, moving on.

Next on the menu is the bacon cheeseburger salad. Here’s what is great about this dish; it’s the perfect “date meal.” Ladies, you know we might try to appear refined with a salad, but deep down we’re craving that thick, savory meat. This salad is the resolve. The dish includes a grand beef patty with melted American cheese mixed on top of romaine lettuce with—you guessed it— bacon. Customers get the taste of a cheeseburger without the entire commitment and, hey, the greens are healthy.

Mac and cheese is no longer just a side dish. The, “Sun- Dried Tomato and Pesto Mac n’ Cheese,” will introduce guests to a more mature side of the classic dish, and there’s enough pesto to go around.

Simply put, Lyons believes his new menu is the product of his love of “sweet, bacon and heat.”

He definitely turned the heat up with the World’s Greatest Turkey Burger. This is a healthy alternative on the new menu with baby greens, red onions, a portabella mushroom cap, honey wheat bun and an insanely delicious turkey patty.

Had your meat and want something sweet? Prepare yourself for the crackling delight of the Pop Rocks milkshake. Indulge in the retro candy of yesteryear partnered with a creamy strawberry taste. It will leave you wondering why no one has thought of this before.

This ingenuity is the heart of the new menu at Slater’s 50/50. Food follows no rules here and even the most trained connoisseurs will find it hard to hide their excitement about familiar foods in unfamiliar combinations.

As if Slater’s couldn’t separate itself from the pack in any other way, its happy hour is offered from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. every day. Now THAT’S something to get happy about! Come enjoy half off craft beers and much more.

So, reacquaint yourself with your favorite foods in topsy-turvy fashion at Slater’s 50/50.

There might just be some bacon in it for you.
