Errors hurt in loss to Huskies

The weekend’s rainstorms were enough to cancel Friday’s and Saturday’s softball games in the San Diego Classic I, but on Sunday, nothing stopped San Diego State from committing a record six errors en route to a 6-3 loss against No. 10 / 11 Washington.

Junior pitcher Bailey Micetich allowed five runs on four hits and two walks in four innings, while striking out three. Fellow pitching phenom senior Samantha Beasley struck out three Huskies and gave up only one hit when she pitched three relief innings for Micetich.

However, the efforts from the Aztec pitching duo were not enough to give SDSU the boost it needed. The six errors it committed were the most since the 2007 season, and the 12 runners left on base were the largest amount since a game against BYU in 2009.

In the bottom of the first inning, freshman Lorena Klopp fouled out, followed by redshirt senior Lindsey Marquez eventually getting on base. Then, sophomore Kamerin May singled to left field and brought home Marquez, giving the Aztecs a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies responded with a run in the top of the second inning and another in the third, giving them a 2-1 edge.
In the fourth inning, sophomore Kristin May and senior Jessica Camello both had hits, but it was Klopp who came through with a home run, her third of the season.

Unfortunately, the excitement for SDSU did not last, as Washington’s Morgan Stuart responded with a lethal three-run homer to left field in the fifth inning. Niki Williams’ home run in the seventh inning gave Washington (8-0) the game-clinching 6-3 lead.

Each of the three losses SDSU (5-3) has earned this season have been against Top 10 teams and programs from last year’s Women’s College World Series. SDSU is still receiving votes in the USA Today / NFCA Poll and are No. 22 in the ESPN.com / USA Softball Poll.

The Aztecs have a challenging weekend ahead of them as they are slated to play in the Cathedral City Classic. They will play Indiana, No. 3 / 7 Tennessee, No. 5 / 5 Florida, No. 4 / 2 Arizona and Florida State.
