Painfully honest, ‘21’ is a brilliant release

Heart-wrenching barely begins to describe the songwriting on Adele’s sophomore LP.

The album titled “21” takes the fluttering love songs of her previous album, “19,” drags them through the gravel, beats a cinder block into their center and feeds each one a shot of whiskey to recover. Kick drums, hand claps and covers take the listener from start to finish. There are also a few acoustic tracks thrown in the mix for those who want to fork out the extra cash for the extended version.

“Rolling in the Deep,” a song written for an ex, gives the listener an idea of what’s to come. “Think of me in the depths of your despair / Make a home down there as mine sure won’t be shared,” she sings, an example of the lyrics of sorrow and heartbreak that flood this record. However, Adele manages to shove a bit of bite behind each one with her amazing voice.

Working with the producing bee’s knees of the music industry such as Paul Epworth (Cee Lo Green and Bloc Party), Francis “Eg” White (Duffy) and Ryan Tedder (Beyoncé and Leona Lewis), Adele has created what will surely become one of this year’s best albums.
