Secret items that’ll make students salivate

Everybody likes to be in on a secret, right? Keeping them is fun, but revealing them is even better. Fast food chains in the U.S. have picked up on how excited people become when in the loop. Why else would so many have secret menus, if not to pique our curiosity and keep patrons coming back for more?

Some secret menus have become so public that the once mystical menu options are now posted on the restaurant’s websites. In-N-Out’s popular Animal Style option is an example of a secret menu exposed — a leak fast food freaks are eternally grateful for. Others, however, remain virtually unknown to anyone except the veteran fast food guru.

Here are some under-the-table options that, for the most part, have stayed under wraps. Read on, but keep it on the down-low …

Chipotle

Chipotle will make almost anything for its customers, whether the item is on the menu or not. Only limited by the reaches of the imagination, customers can order any combination of ingredients the chain has available. Listed below are some favorites.

Nachos – Made with tortilla chips, a choice of salsa, meat, beans and topped with a layer of cheese.

Quesadillas – These come in two sizes, the children’s size made with two soft taco shells layered with a choice of fillings, or the full size that is a burrito tortilla folded in half with a choice of fillings.

Quesorito – A quesadilla with any of the fillings used in a burrito, rolled together and baked in a tortilla warmer.

Jamba Juice

One of the most highly confidential secret menus available today comes from this popular smoothie joint. In fact, the only knowledge available to the public is the mystical names of the drinks reminiscent of favorite childhood confections. Pick one and take the plunge into sugary sherbet heaven. Smoothies such as Pink Starburst, Sour Patch Kid, Now and Later and Push Pop are available. Peanut Butter and Jelly, Apple Pie and Fruity Pebbles are also available.

Starbucks

Starbucks will make absolutely anything with the ingredients its baristas are provided, no matter how insane the drink. The phrase “the customer is always right” reigns true at this coffee dynasty.

Biscotti Frappuccino – This is a typical frappuccino but it has a biscotti blended inside. The biscotti has to be purchased separately, but it can be added to any flavored frappucino.

Short Drink – This is a less-expensive version of any Starbucks drink. It is smaller than a tall with a lesser price.

Poor Man’s Latte- For the penny pinchers out there, ask for a short cup with any number of shots on ice, and fill up the cup as desired with milk from the condiment bar. Voila: It’s a latte, sans the added expense of milk.

Crunch Berry Frappuccino – Flavored like Cap’n Crunch Crunch Berries cereal, this is a strawberries and cream frappuccino with toffee nut syrup.

London Fog – Vanilla flavoring and steamed milk with Earl Gray tea.

Chili’s

While there is no longer chili on the menu — a resoundingly misleading phenomenon —if the retired item is requested, a cup of what the establishment is so famously named after will be delivered to the table.

Fatburger

This last item may possibly be the greatest undercover item ever to be divulged. At Fatburger, a Hypocrite can be ordered — a veggie burger with crispy bacon strips on top.

Remember, not all restaurants may participate in the hidden menu. If the server’s face goes blank when an undisclosed item is requested, try again at another location. It’s likely someone at the establishment will know how to prepare the special order.

Yearning to be tasted, these underground items are worth going out on a limb for … just keep it under wraps.
