Kate Nash isn’t afraid to sing the female point of view. In her freshman album “Made of Bricks,” Nash delves into heartbreak and failed relationships all while keeping a feisty attitude. Songs such as “We Get On” and “Nicest Thing” dive into longing for love through insecure personal stories.

“Pumpkin Soup” and “Mouthwash” are upbeat songs with simple lyrics that exert her independence. Although she relies more on the wit and charm of her lyricism than complex song structures, she creates a sound that is instantly empathetic and individual. It is incredibly difficult not to love an artist who wears their heart on a sleeve so proudly. Her London accent is thick and her talented piano playing is apparent in almost every song without falling into the mainstream pop ballad trap. Her cutesy demeanor, frilly dresses and fondness for knitting and baking comes through in her concise lyrics reminiscent of a girl next door.

Nash would be a great recommendation for fans of Rilo Kiley, Regina Spektor or Lily Allen. In a male-dominated industry, Nash isn’t afraid to show her true colors.
