SDSU tops West Virginia In extra innings

In his first start of the season, sophomore Bubba Derby pitched phenomenal going eight innings, with seven strikeouts, and one earned run, en route to a 2-1 victory in 10 innings for the SDSU baseball team, against West Virginia.

Derby has served as the Aztecs closer since he started playing last season, but head coach Tony Gwynn decided to move him into the rotation and move junior pitcher Michael Cederoth to the closer role.

“We came into this year thinking (Derby) would be a starter the whole time,” Gwynn said.

West Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the 6th, and then SDSU tied it up in the 7th on a fielding error by senior starting pitcher Sean Carley of West Virginia.

Freshman outfielder Tyler Adkinson provided the walk-off fielder’s choice, in a pinch hit appearance, scoring senior infielder Tim Zier in the 10th.

“Good teams find a way to win a game like that, because you know it could have gone either way,” Gwynn said.
