San Diego State (4-12, 0-5 MPSF) looked for their third home winat ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista last Friday.
The Aztecs came up empty, losing 1-0 to New Mexico (7-8-1, 2-2-1MPSF).
SDSU dropped their fifth loss in a row, and are still winless intheir own league.
“I think we played as hard as we could, we were getting plenty ofchances. We just couldn’t finish,” Leitner said. “They beat us 1-0the past three years, which is getting pretty old.”
Forwards David Beltran, Darren Parker, Jeff Leitner, andmidfielders Oscar Rodriguez, Dan Gotvald and Chaplin Early were allhonored on Senior Day for their hard work over the past years. Allfive of them were granted starting positions by assistant coach LevKirshner, and played admirably in San Diego State’s home finale.
Despite the defeat, it was a special day for the seniors on themen’s soccer team in Chula Vista.
As one of the honored seniors, Leitner provided his insight ofanother disappointing loss at home in his fourth start of the year.
Defender John Erwin scored his fifth goal of the season in the73rd minute off a rebound by teammate Ryan Turnello. Aztecsgoalkeeper Brian Barnes made a good save off Turnello, but washelpless when Erwin put the shot past Barnes to his right-hand side.
Barnes had five saves as the team was outshot 11-3 in the secondhalf.
The defeat was the eighth shutout in 16 games for SDSU thisseason, and third in a row after shutout losses to Cal St. Fullertonand UCLA.
The Aztecs again showed their need for another goal-scorer, onewho can always be counted on to give the team better chances everysingle game.
“We just need to get better play combinations, and get put chancesaway. I don’t think we’ve lost that much when we score first. Wedefinitely need a goal-scorer somewhere.”
When asked of the actual pre-game festivities for Leitner and hisfellow five seniors, Leitner said he appreciated the recognition.
“It was good to get our families out there. It was too bad wecouldn’t win.”
