Two members of a San Diego State University fraternity were injured Friday when three men in their early 20s entered the chapter house, apparently with vengeance on their minds.
The victims, members of Delta Sigma Phi, were playing “foosball” when the three men entered the house and yelled, “Remember us?”
They immediately began punching the fraternity members, resulting in various cuts and bruises on the victims’ heads and faces. After striking the victims repeatedly, the three men fled.
The fraternity members told University Police the assault may have been in retaliation for a fight that broke out March 31 at the house when three men with similar descriptions attempted to crash an invitation-only party held by the fraternity.
The case has been forwarded to the University Police investigations unit. The investigations unit is asking anyone with information to call 594-5722.
Man arrested after
assaulting police officers
Reports of a prowler in the College Area led to the arrest of a San Diego man after he allegedly assaulted two University Police officers.
The alleged prowler, James Patrick Gifford, 26, was contacted by University Police on the west side of Chapultepec and Templo Del Sol residence halls March 29.
After talking with Gifford, one of the police officers patted down Gifford to check for weapons. During the pat-down, Gifford tried to reach for a knife he had in his pocket. Although restrained by the officers, Gifford continued to reach for the knife.
He was eventually handcuffed and put into a patrol car. Screaming obscenities and kicking blindly, Gifford kicked one officer in the leg and the other in the hand.
During a search of Gifford, officers found a glass cocaine pipe. Gifford was arrested on suspicion of assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and possession of cocaine paraphernalia. Gifford is not an SDSU student.
The residents who made the initial report said a man matching Gifford’s description had been prowling the area for about three weeks, probably casing the area for a possible residential burglary, said Public Safety Crime Prevention Specialist Marc Fox.
Transient arrested three
times in three days
A transient who has made the SDSU campus his home was arrested three times between April 1 and April 3.
The transient, Ping Tumatan, 46, was found inside the Adams Humanities building pushing a shopping cart April 1.
University Police confiscated the cart and advised Tumatan not to return to campus for seven days based on his not being a student and his presence being a disruption.
Tumatan was determined to be an illegal immigrant and was turned over to the border patrol. He was voluntarily deported from the country.
The next day, Tumatan was found inside Aztec Shops and arrested for returning to campus after being advised not to return within seven days. Tumatan was escorted off campus and readvised not to return before April 8.
On April 3, Tumatan was arrested a third time after reportedly causing a disruption outside Maya Residence Hall on the 6000 block of Lindo Paseo.
Tumatan was contacted by University Police officers, who found him with another shopping cart. Tumatan was cited for re-entering the campus and for unlawful possession of a shopping cart.
