MEN’S GOLF
The No. 24 San Diego State men’s golf team has had a great season so far.
The team has two wins and several top-five finishes.
Despite its recent success, SDSU is looking back – as in 2004, when the Aztecs won the Oregon Duck Invitational at the Shadow Hills Country Club.
And in 2006, SDSU will look to continue its success at Shadow Hills.
The tournament takes place today and tomorrow in Junction City, Ore., and features a 12-team field to include UC Davis, Pacific and the Mountain West Conference’s Wyoming.
But the Aztecs not only have the advantage of their past performances in Oregon, they also have momentum on their side. SDSU is fresh off a victory at the 2006 Callaway Golf Invitational, hosted by USD. Senior Andrew Scott finished second at the invitational and will lead an Aztec lineup with all five golfers posting stroke average scores in the mid-to-low 70s.
With all the team’s advantages, head coach Ryan Donovan said he is optimistic about the next few days.
“Coming off a win at (Callaway) we have higher expectations,” Donovan said. “The guys are quietly confident.”
WOMEN’S GOLF
The SDSU women’s golf team will join the men’s squad in Oregon and will participate in the the Oregon Duck Invitational at Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswekk, Ore.
The tournament may be a long one for the Aztecs, with a field featuring four teams in the top 50.
Also, the loss of senior Heather MacRae – who led the team with top-10 finishes in six of the seven events she played in – put a damper on the 2005-06 season.
Freshman Maki Kamimura, who now leads the team with a 78.87 stroke average, has finished second among her fellow Aztecs in two events this year, and finished 18th at the UNLV Invitational.
Experienced senior Megan Mulhaupt lends her 79.36 average and two second-place, “A” team finishes to the fray, while junior Jamie Oliver and sophomore Anna Booth, both competing in their second tournaments of the spring campaign, bring solid games.
Freshman Petra Cole, with an 81 average in 12 rounds this year, rounds out the starting five for SDSU.
