To say the San Diego State water polo team won its matches on Friday and Saturday with ease would be an understatement.
In the four games that SDSU played, it outscored the opposition 61-9.
The Aztecs scored an average of 15.25 goals per game, against their opponent’s meager 2.25.
The team recorded its second shutout of the season (a school record) with a 16-0 defeat of Colorado State and the second 20-goal performance of the year when SDSU beat Cal State Monterey Bay 20-3.
With the four-game sweep of its opponents (CSUMB, CSU, Redlands and Chapman) at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center, the Aztecs have improved their record to 16-5 and are on pace to break their previous season-best record of 26-9. The team has swept its way through two straight tournaments and is riding a seven-game winning streak.
“It is definitely a psychological edge to be playing dominant water polo, and our girls are gaining confidence, which will carry over in the long run,” head coach Carin Crawford said.
However, a look at the SDSU’s schedule shows that the squad’s optimism should be guarded at best.
In the team’s first 21 games, it has competed against only five Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponents, and SDSU is just 3-2 in those games.
Now, with the non-conference schedule out of the way, the Aztecs will enter a brutal stretch of five-straight MPSF opponents, including matches with Cal, USC and Stanford.
Crawford relishes the challenge, though.
“We are definitely looking forward to being in more competitive games,” Crawford said. “These past tournaments have been very valuable, (but) the upcoming games will give us a chance to move up in the rankings and get us closer to our (goal) of making the NCAA Tournament.”
