I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Pam Furby. I am a senior at SDSU and the drug and alcohol prevention provider for the community of Pacific Beach. For the past three years, I’ve been working closely with SDSU in an attempt to create a safe and healthy environment that supports college students having fun. Pacific Beach has become this place.
As you may be aware, there are more than 200 alcohol-selling establishments in the Pacific Beach and Mission Beach communities, all of them eager to serve college-age students. The bars, restaurants and liquor stores in my neighborhood have gone to great lengths to train their employees in responsible service, thus lowering the risks for those choosing to drink alcohol. These licensees are concerned about minors who drink and purchase alcohol, as well as minors who attempt to use fake identification.
Although alcohol is the No. 1 abused drug on college campuses, it goes without saying that we’d like to keep SDSU’s sporting events safe for everyone to enjoy. Therefore, I request the academic senate not to increase the number of alcohol outlets on our campus.
