The eighth annual Earth Fair will be held in Balboa Park this Sunday. About 60,000 people are expected to attend events taking place throughout the park.
“Earth Day is a day to focus on environmental issues,” said Keith Shillington, one of the founders of San Diego Earth Day.
This year’s theme, “It’s Your Turn,” coincides with the 28th annual Earth Day, he said.
The day will begin with the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. and remarks by San Diego Council member Christine Kehoe and State Assemblyman Howard Wayne.
At 10:30 a.m., kids can participate in the All Species Parade. Children will dress as endangered species and march from the Organ Pavillion to the Children’s Sky Stage.
Parking will be available in the Florida Canyon Landfill, where a shuttle will transport patrons to Balboa Park.
Earth Fair participants are encouraged to ride a bike or walk to the fair. Free valet bike parking will be available near the Reuben H. Fleet Space Theater and the Museum of Man.
Community members can still volunteer for Sunday’s event. A volunteer meeting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Balboa Park Club.
“The day of the event, volunteers interested can go to the information booth and ask if more helpers are needed,” Shillington added.
