If silence is in fact golden, then San Diego State’s bats are worth millions.
For the third straight game, SDSU’s offense was silent, as the Aztecs were swept by UCLA.
And again, it was the Bruin’s pitching that did in SDSU.
Bruin starter Tyson Brummett threw seven innings of one-run ball to lead UCLA to a 9-1 win on Sunday at Jackie Robinson Stadium and a series sweep for the weekend. The loss – the 10th straight for the Aztecs – dropped SDSU’s record to 6-20 on the season, while the Bruins improved to 15-11.
The Aztecs struggled to get anything started offensively against Brummett, who allowed just five singles.
SDSU’s lone run came after junior Lance Zawadzki and sophomore Mike Willeford led off the top of the fifth inning with back-to-back singles. Zawadzki scored when junior Quintin Berry reached base on a fielder’s choice. It was the only time that the Aztecs strung consecutive hits together against Brummett.
Brummett followed the example set by fellow UCLA starters Hector Ambriz and Dave Huff in the first two games of the series by taking an early lead given to him by his offense and never looking back. In total, the three pitchers threw 23 of the series’ 27 innings and allowed SDSU to cross home plate just five times.
Aztec senior pitcher Will Miller also followed his predecessors by becoming the third SDSU starter to last fewer than five innings against the Bruin offense.
Miller allowed five runs – four earned – before being pulled in favor of junior Brett Douglas after 4.1 innings.
After scoring the game’s first run in the second inning – partly because of a throwing error by Miller – UCLA widened the gap in the third by giving the Aztecs a glimpse of the power that was on display all weekend long.
An RBI double by Bruin Chris Jensen to left centerfield scored teammate Blair Dunlap, who reached base via a one out walk. After a strikeout by Ambriz, Tim Stewart made it a four run Bruin lead with a home run to left field.
