For San Diego State’s men’s tennis team, there are going to be days like this. SDSU came into its match against USC playing well, but discovered that a victory on the road against the No. 6 team in the nation just wasn’t going to happen. The Aztecs struggled against the Trojans, falling 6-1 on Tuesday at Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles.USC presented a pressure-filled environment, with one of the best tennis programs in the country on their home courts. The weather didn’t help, creating a windy, uncomfortable environment. But most importantly, the Trojans were clearly the better team. And the struggles began right away, during doubles play.Junior Bartosz Golas and sophomore Achim Ceban, a duo that recently won the National Collegiate Tennis Classic doubles championship, were quickly downed by USC’s Robert Farah and Kaes Van’t Hof, the No. 2 tandem in the nation.”Their No. 1 team is top-notch,” head coach Gene Carswell said. “They lost in the finals in the national indoors (last year).”While the youthful SDSU came into the match ranked No. 50 in the nation, the lack of experience became a factor against an energized crowd.”They have a lot of people screaming, yelling, and trying to get you out of rhythm,” Golas said. “I think all of us had trouble getting into our matches and playing as good as we normally would play. I think we played under our normal level. The Aztecs knew that the odds were stacked against them, and although they were defeated handily, the team is still optimistic.”I think you can still take a lot of positive things out of this match and build confidence for Sunday’s (match),” Golas said. “We have a really good team with big potential.”SDSU takes on No. 70 Fresno State on at noon on Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center, and Carswell feels that success starts with the team’s doubles play.”I feel for us and our success, if we can compete well in doubles and do the things that we need to do, we’ll go a long way,” said Carswell.
