In a coming-of-age tale, several talented indie artists provide the ultimate feel-good soundtrack to complement the inspirational movie “Juno.”
Director Jason Reitman’s film about a young couple’s unexpected pregnancy supplies a soundtrack that perfectly portrays a simple, childlike sense of curiosity.
Kimya Dawson, the gifted former female singer/songwriter of the Moldy Peaches is responsible for the bulk of much of the unique sound of “Juno.” However, there are various underground artists who contribute to the soundtrack’s relaxed tone as well.
The soundtrack boasts a distinct mixture of melodic music, including timely tunes by the illustrious indie band Belle & Sebastian. Songs such as “Expectations,” by Tigermilk, and “Piazza, New York Catcher,” by Dear Catastrophe Waitress, are featured throughout the heartwarming story, along with Barry Louis Polisar’s “All I Want Is You,” Buddy Holly’s “Dearest,” The Kinks’ “A Well Respected Man,” Dawson’s former band the Moldy Peaches, and The Velvet Underground with “I’m Sticking With You.”
In fact, the respective rock music that Juno and Mark, the soon-to-be adoptive father, exchange throughout the film is incorporated in the soundtrack, an uncommon pattern for the genre.
Along with the film’s success came the unexpected prosperity of the mellow soundtrack, by critics and moviegoers alike. It has witnessed surprisingly high sales, becoming the top selling album on iTunes upon its release last month, and remaining at No. 1 for 10 weeks.
Possibly the most well-known and established name on the soundtrack is Sonic Youth, the influential 1990’s American alternative-rock band from New York City. Sonic Youth’s “Superstar,” from the album “If I Were a Carpenter,” is the attention getting hit on the soundtrack.
Cat Power is another major, at-large artist presented on the soundtrack. Her soft-spoken melody “Sea of Love” is catchy and wistful while capturing the listener’s ear.
Even Michael Cera, widely known for his role as Evan in the blockbuster comedy “Superbad,” exposes his vocal skills with Ellen Page (Juno) in the closing moments of the movie. The two lovebirds do their best impression of the Moldy Peaches’ “Anyone Else But You” as the journey of “Juno” comes to a conclusion. In this moment, the viewer can’t help but sing along with the two as they softly strum their acoustic guitars side by side on a front porch.
The feeling that overcomes the listener after hearing the soundtrack is unpredictable yet pleasurable because of the acoustic-indie flavor and a wide variety of authentic musicians.
The “Juno” soundtrack offers a unique blend of heartwarming harmonies and soulful songs that will keep your toes tapping and your ears happy. Do yourself a favor and listen to the soundtrack on repeat while studying, reading or just catching that afternoon nap before class.
