Two weeks ago, things were looking up for the San Diego State baseball team.
The Aztecs took two of three games from then-No. 12 Pepperdine and played so well that head coach Tony Gwynn was satisfied with the team’s performance despite losing the series finale.
SDSU finally looked ready to dig itself out of its early hole.
Now – two weeks later – the Aztecs are still looking for their first win since that series against Pepperdine, and the hole the team finds itself in seems deeper than ever.
Despite all of the progress SDSU (6-19) seemed to be making, it dropped its ninth-straight game, 12-2, to UCLA, as senior pitcher Adam Simon gave up eight runs before the Aztecs got a two-run jack by senior Curt Mendoza in the fifth inning to break up the shutout.
But other than Mendoza’s third homer, SDSU couldn’t touch Bruin pitcher Dave Huff. Huff worked an efficient eight innings, allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out five batters, leading the Bruins to the win.
And, to make matters worse, Saturday’s game was d
