Spring Break for most students is a chance to go home or party atthe beach. But while the majority of the student body was living itup, San Diego State’s women’s tennis team was taking care ofbusiness.
No. 22 SDSU (14-7, 7-0) completed conference play this weekend ata tournament in Colorado Springs with a 5-2 win on Sunday over hostAir Force. The win kept the Aztecs undefeated in the Mountain WestConference and 9-1 in their last 10 contests.
SDSU claimed the conference title a day earlier when they shut outNo. 50 New Mexico 7-0.
“It feels good,” junior Katja Karrento said. “We expected it. Itwas one of our goals from the beginning of the season.”
Karrento had sat out singles play in the two matches before thisweekend due to a knee injury, but was back in action in time to helpher team this weekend against Air Force where she won at the No. 2singles position.
Seniors Katey Becker, Julie Chidley and freshman Indra Erichsenalso won their singles matches to help cap off the perfect season.
Double your pleasure
Doubles has been a strength for this team all season and it hasbeen unstoppable as of late. Karrento moved into the No. 1 doublesslot along with sophomore teammate Katalina Romero a few weeks agoand the duo has since thrived in that position. They are part of thereason the Aztecs have swept doubles in eight of the last ninematches.
Becker has been at San Diego State for four years and feels thisis the best team she has been a part of in that span.
“Everybody on this team has a great work ethic,” Becker said. “Weall get along and we all put forward 100 percent effort out there.”
Bring on the rest
SDSU will look to strengthen all aspects of its game as they playout the remaining matches before heading to the Mountain WestConference Championship as the heavy favorite.
“We are not just excited about the tournament,” Karrento said. “Weare determined to win it.”
The Aztecs will play their next game at home Saturday againstLoyola Marymount. The match is set for noon and will be held at theSDSU Courts.
