The San Diego State men’s golf team finished yesterday’s finalround at the Oregon Duck Invitational right where they started –seventh place.
Brandon Kearney posted the Aztec’s best 54-hole score(71-69-70–210), and finished the Shadow Hills Country Club coursetied for third, but for the first time this spring, Kearney was notone of head coach Dale Walkers starting five.
The seventh-place finish stops the men’s three-match winningstreak.
But while winning is the goal at every tournament, the focus ofthe team is on preparing for regionals, junior John Lieber said.
“It is easy to get caught up in the success, but these tournamentsare just confidence builders for us,” Lieber said. “We are probablyalready in regionals, so we just need to make sure we are 100 percentready when we get there.”
Coach Walker said he thinks that the seventh-place finish has itspositive points.
“On the positive side, this result allows us to now sit down, quitfeeling so good about ourselves, and get back to work,” Walker said.”This is a great wake-up call for us as we head into the final twoevents of the regular season and get focused for the post-season.”
Oregon’s Chris Carnahan birdied on the 18th hole to win thetournament by one stroke for the Ducks.
The Aztecs travel to Laredo, Texas for the Border OlympicsInvitational April 5-6.
