Men’s Golf
San Diego State was close to making history at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational last weekend at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
After being tied for first place with UNLV as a result of a 29-under-par 549 on Saturday, SDSU was just one day away from winning three consecutive tournaments in one season.
The last time that happened was in the 2001-02 season.
But Arizona came back on Sunday and finished five strokes ahead of the Aztecs’ 29-under-par 835 performance, with four out of the five Wildcats shooting in the 60s.
SDSU ultimately finished in third place, four strokes behind the Rebels, but head coach Ryan Donovan was still pleased with his team’s overall play.
“All in all, we’re starting to peak at the right time,” Donovan said. “We were very satisfied by the way the guys played. We got beat by a team that wasn’t in our pairings.
“We started playing a little bit of match play. But this third place definitely helps to get picked for the NCAA Tournament Regional.”
Sophomore Aaron Goldberg was the top individual finisher for the Aztecs, coming in fifth place overall with a 9-under-par 207. This marks the second time Goldberg had the best performance in SDSU’s last four tournaments.
Donovan said Goldberg has simply gone back to the basics.
“When he came back in the fall, he was a little anxious, trying to put too much pressure to perform,” Donovan said. “He’s taking the attitude in the spring to keep it simple. Now, the results are coming like they should.”
BASEBALL
The Aztec baseball team’s April 4 game against No. 2 CSU Fullerton was postponed because of rain. The contest has been rescheduled for May 16.
SDSU also added a game against USD against May 17.
