Men’s golf looking to silence conference critics
For the No.24 San Diego State men’s golf team, winning first at the Oregon Duck Invitational two weekends ago solidified its status as the team to beat in the Mountain West Conference.
With the MWC Championships looming around the corner, every tournament is an opportunity to further silence the doubters.
This Friday and Saturday at Karsten Course in Tempe, Ariz., SDSU will compete in the Thunderbird Invitational hosted by the Arizona State Sun Devils. The two-day event will be an excellent test of just how strong the Aztecs really are, with teams such as Colorado State (which has five top-10 finishes this year) and the Sun Devils (who have won five of the last six Thunderbird Invitationals).
With two-time MWC Player of the Month Andrew Scott leading SDSU into the tournament with a strong supporting cast, including Aaron Goldberg and David Palm, the Aztecs believe they have the talent and experience needed to carry them to victory.
“We need to use the momentum we’ve gained in previous weeks and just stick with it,” head coach Ryan Donovan said of his team’s chances at the Thunderbird.
Crew has edge in experience
A week after a fourth place finish in the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay, the SDSU crew team is once again back in familiar waters.
This weekend, the Aztecs will compete in the San Diego City Championships on Saturday and Sunday, facing cross-town rivals USD and UCSD.
The Toreros and Titans will face an SDSU squad that had all four boats reach the petite or grand finals last weekend.
After the impressive performance last week, the Aztecs, with open boat junior coxwain Aileen Gonzales, have an edge in experience that could spell trouble for the city title contenders.
Baseball game rained out
As the SDSU baseball team prepared for yet another game against a high-ranked opponent, it got an unexpected reprieve from above.
The Aztecs’ game against Baseball America’s top-ranked CSU Fullerton was rained out on Tuesday, as a storm front swept through San Diego, bringing out the tarp and causing the game’s cancellation.
