San Diego State will welcome the families of its new students during Family Weekend, which starts tomorrow and ends on Sunday.
The annual three-day event gives families of new college students the chance to explore and learn more about SDSU on their own or through a number of planned activities, such as lunch in the Cuicacalli Dining Room and a pep rally in Aztec Center.
Janet Castro, director of New Student and Parent Programs, said she anticipates a large turnout.
“This year’s event sold a record number of 2,300 tickets,” Castro said. “We’ve added new events this year, and it’s the biggest Family Weekend yet.”
Members of the Aztec Parents Advisory Board and university staff will greet the families each day, guiding them toward the weekend plans and answering any questions they may have about the campus.
Family Weekend participants have the option to map out their weekend ahead of time with pre-paid event tickets, name tags and a provided itinerary, or to play it by ear.
Pre-business freshman Ashley Bennett said her parents, brother and a close friend are coming tomorrow to partake in the weekend’s festivities.
“My parents signed up late, so we don’t have any set plans,” Bennett said. “But I’m excited for my family to see what campus life is like.”
Several events are scheduled each day to ensure that all guests have the chance to see the campus first hand. Each day this weekend, visitors can check out tours of the Malcolm A. Love Library, as well as attend the Aztec Recreation Center and Aztec Aquaplex open houses. There will also be a discount on all SDSU logo items at the bookstore all weekend.
An international photo exhibit highlighting SDSU’s advanced study abroad program will be displayed along Centennial Walkway and a barbecue picnic accompanied by a musical performance will take place at Scripps Cottage.
Younger siblings of students will also have a special event, as Aztec Center Bowling and Games will host a special event for younger guests to experience the arcade and interact with SDSU students.
The weekend is aimed at providing different options that appeal to all. Those with an appreciation for the performing arts can attend a live theater production of “The Glass Menagerie” and sports enthusiasts can cheer on the Aztecs at the football game and pre-game reception.
