Forget the nine losses in the first 12 games. Forget the missedopportunities, mental errors and lack of intensity. Forget thenegatives that marred the beginning of this season for San DiegoState.
The women’s soccer team dominated in a 2-1 victory over WyomingSunday at the SDSU Sports Deck.
In the process, it may have also saved its season.
The win leaves the Aztecs (5-9) tied for first place at 2-0 in theMountain West Conference with Brigham Young and Nevada-Las Vegas.They will have the chance to knock BYU out of first when the two playThursday night in Provo, Utah.
SDSU showed all the qualities it had lacked in starting the season3-9.
Wyoming (6-5-1 overall, 0-2 MWC) struck first in the 19th minutewhen, after a bad clearance by the Aztecs defense, Cowgirls forwardKatrina Morton put the ball into the upper-left corner of the netfrom 23 yards out for her fourth goal of the season.
The game seemed to be going according to form for SDSU, as it fellbehind early thanks to mental errors. The script called for Wyomingto dominate the rest of the game.
Apparently, the Aztecs didn’t get a copy of the script on time, asthey dominated the rest of the game in every sense of the word.
After the goal, SDSU head coach Chuck Clegg substituted freshmanforward Kim Castellanos for sophomore Bethany Robinson, and juniormidfielder Fay deLeon for junior Kim Rogers.
In the 35th minute, Castellanos tied the game at 1-1 with herthird goal of the season. DeLeon took a corner kick from the rightside, and Castellanos headed it in for her third goal of hercollegiate career. DeLeon, who leads the Aztecs with 12 points, wascredited with her fourth assist of the season.
Castellanos wasn’t finished, though. In the 60th minute and with aCowgirls defender in her face, Castellanos scored her second of theday and fourth on the year. The 23-yard blast put SDSU up for good.
The 2-1 score was not indicative of the game, as it was nowherenear that close.
The Aztecs outshot Wyoming by an unbelievable 19-5 margin, nearlyquadrupling the Cowgirls in that department. SDSU took 10 cornerkicks; Wyoming took only two. The Cowgirls had 13 fouls to theAztecs’ six.
The game was a coming out party for the highly-touted Castellanos.After entering the game in the 19th minute, Castellanos took over andshowed Wyoming just why she was so highly touted coming out of RanchoBernardo High School. Castellanos was in the face of Cowgirlsgoalkeeper Amanda Vandervort whenever she was on the field, taking 10shots – twice as many as the entire Wyoming squad – inher best collegiate match by far.
