While sophomore utility Hayley Miles may be all laughs off the field — using her humor and wittiness to brighten up anyone’s day — on the field, Miles possesses the discipline, leadership and camaraderie needed to help her team win games.

“It is a privilege to play with Hayley,” sophomore utility Katie Mathis said. “She is not only a great teammate but a wonderful friend.”

Miles began playing softball at the age of five. She credits her initial inspiration to play the sport to her older sister.

Since then, Miles has made a name for herself in the softball community. She played for Center High School in Antelope, where she earned four letters. She was a four-time all-league selection and a four-time team MVP.

With only her second season playing for the Aztecs underway, Miles has already achieved honors most athletes will never claim during their entire collegiate careers. Last season, she was named the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and was also a selection for the all-conference team.

Despite the high expectations placed on this sophomore to continue the streak she ended last season with, Miles never lets the pressure get in her way.

“There’s pressure, but I don’t let it get to me. I don’t think about last season because my focus is now on this season and playing my best game,” Miles said.

It has become evident during the course of this season that Miles can handle the heat. As the Aztecs’ leadoff hitter, she leads the team with a .374 batting average and has a team-best 37 hits.

In addition, Miles is the only player to start in every game. Defensively, she plays several positions including center field, shortstop and catcher — essentially, she’s the whole package.

Even with such notable stats, Miles is always looking for room to improve.

“I like being the leadoff batter because I enjoy setting the tone and I love whatever position they put me in. But this season, I want to become a more consistent hitter,” Miles said.

Miles certainly has a bright future ahead of her. Her dedicated work ethic and strong compassion for her teammates truly exemplifies the qualities of an athlete worth recognition.
