The good and the ugly of dating a co-worker

Jordan Owen, Staff Photographer

When you work full time and go to school full time, you’ll quickly begin to notice one thing—it leaves depressingly little time for the scraps of a social life to which you desperately cling. If you’re not already in a committed, long- term relationship with someone (conveniently built into your hectic schedule) you face the daunting dilemma of dating as well.

As time goes on, especially with the approaching holidays, you begin to notice a strange phenomena. You suddenly realize how attractive that Information Technology guy you’d never really paid attention to at the office is. Before you know it, you’re dressing cuter than you normally do and finding unusual computer problems that require him to stop by your desk more frequently than ever before.

Then you two begin dating, it’s wonderful. I mean, it’s as close to perfect as you could imagine. For starters, you see him eight hours a day, five days a week. Given your crazy schedule, that’s more than you see your best friend. Neither of you wants to deal with the drama of the entire office knowing you two are an item, so you keep it hush-hush and try to fly beneath the radar. And nothing is more thrilling than forbidden love.

The main downfall, however, with dating someone you work with is you’re dating someone you work with. If it doesn’t work out, you’re stuck with a sulking co-worker eight hours a day, five days a week—and now you’ll have to find someone else to fix your computer.
