A San Diego State search committee began a series of open forums to choose the new provost and senior vice president of academic affairs.

The first forum, held on Feb. 19, featured Robert Marley, the current vice president for student success at Montana State University.

Marley spoke about his qualifications for the position and the importance of SDSU’s Strategic Plan.

“The Strategic Plan being put on the campus is very exciting,” Marley said. “Whoever the provost may be will have a great asset in the (Strategic Plan).”

The Strategic Plan focuses on three institution goals for the university: student success, research and creative endeavors, as well as community and communication.

He described the role he thought a provost should have, as well as ways available opportunities could be utilized.

“They are a cheerleader, helping marshal the resources, engaging the faculty in moving the university forward,” Marley said.

Marley also addressed the value of accessible higher education.

“We need to better ourselves and better our community and public higher education is a way to do that,” Marley said.

After the presentation, Marley answered questions regarding his international experience, creative activities, growing class sizes and promoting the universities research agenda.

Director of the School of Communication William Snavely, who is the chair of the search committee for the new provost, said the provost fulfills a versatile role.

“The provost is the leader of the academic side of the enterprise at the university,” Snavely said.

According to Snavely, the provost has many duties, such as overseeing academic affairs, portioning resources and the hiring of faculty.

“In many ways the faculty would view the provost as the most important member of the university, second to the president of course,” Snavely said.

According to Snavely, after the candidates are interviewed for the position, the top candidates are chosen and then the search committee gives its recommendations to President Elliot Hirshman.
