Tennis to welcome six teams this weekend

The San Diego State men’s tennis team opened up its season last weekend on the at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men’s All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

It was an up and down tournament for the Aztecs, as junior Freddy Gelbrich and sophomore Hendrik Jebens picked up a win and a loss in the opening doubles rounds. Senior Thorsten Bertch and Mark Goles-Babic were removed from the bracket after losing in the first round to a duo from the University of North Carolina.

The Aztecs return to action this weekend at the SDSU Fall Invitational. The invitational spans from Oct. 3-5 at the Aztec Tennis Center. After that, they head off to the ITA Regional Championships in Malibu from Oct. 17-21.

SDSU welcomes the University of Arizona, Loyola Marymount University, the University of Denver, the University of San Diego, University of California, San Diego and Grand Canyon University to the Aztec Tennis Center.

Though SDSU is only scheduled to take part in 12 more days of competitive play this season, they’ll spend quite a bit of time on the road. The worst of which will come in early November when the team heads to Flushing Meadows, New York for the ITA National Indoor Championships.

SDSU will have its hands full this season after losing two of its players from last year’s squad: Juan Florez from Columbia and Hunter Nicholas from Utah. However, they also added three new players to the fall season’s roster in freshman Santiago Cevallos from Mexico and the two sophomores Saxon Buehning and Goles-Babic.

Playing against some of the better squads the NCAA has to offer, coupled with travelling across the country leave the Aztecs, who finished 12-12 last year, with a tough task ahead.
