The San Diego State community came together to experience an unforgettable show at a College Area home on the balmy evening of Oct. 6. This event featured Avery Cochrane as the opening act and Cherry Knot as the headliner. Both acts performed highly anticipated singles, adding an extra layer of excitement to the atmosphere.

The concert commenced at approximately 8:30 p.m. when SDSU student and musician Avery Cochrane, fifth year political science major, took the stage. She opened her set with her popular song “Dreamboy” and concluded with her new single “Things I Wish You Said.”

“Things I Wish You Said” was inspired by the perspective of a toxic ex-partner, specifically in a relationship where closure was absent.

The lyrics express the longing for words one wishes their ex had communicated during or after the breakup. This single is a collaboration with Cochrane’s longtime friend, Anna Justen. Excited about the opportunity to play this new single live, Cochrane expressed her love for house shows.

“Everyone is always just having a good time,” Cochrane said shortly after her performance at the event.

At around 10 p.m., Cherry Knot began their performance, captivating the audience with their all-girl indie surf rock style.

The band is composed of mostly SDSU students, with Kinsey Claudino on bass, Brooke Diebold on vocals, Abby Donaldson on lead guitar, Jade Lewenhaupt on drums and Katie Thomas on rhythm guitar.

Cherry Knot’s setlist began with a crowd-pleasing cover of Avril Lavingne’s “Sk8er Boi.” The set closed with “Misery Business” by Paramore, followed by a thrilling encore performance of Metric’s “Black Sheep.” These song choices resonated with Cherry Knot’s music style, allowing them to showcase their talent at its fullest.

Their setlist also featured their new single, “Coronado.” Claudino, sharing insights with The Daily Aztec, explained that the lyrics behind “Coronado” are inspired by an unreleased song titled “La Jolla” by Lovejoy.

Cherry Knot described Friday’s show as “electric” and they expressed their gratitude for the incredible support in an Instagram post on Oct. 9.

“The support from our release show was insane. Y’all really came out and went crazy. We love you guys so much,” Cherry Knot said in the post.

“This was the first house show that we played that we were headlining, so we didn’t know what to expect,” Claudino said. “We like to think that every show gets better and better, and this show definitely proved this to be true.”

The dual debut of Avery Cochrane and Cherry Knot’s singles not only showcased the rich musical talent within the SDSU community but also united students for an evening filled with great music and great vibes. Amidst this timeframe filled with midterm-related stress, this occasion offered a sense of relaxation for several students.

For those eager to catch the next SDSU house show, another Cherry Knot performance will take place on Oct. 20 at 5339 West Falls View Drive, where they will share the stage with Bliss Hour and The Microblades. Doors open at 6 p.m. and admission is $10. Attendees are encouraged to wear a costume!
