Policies

The Daily Aztec strives to provide its readers with a broad selection of advertisements without significantly limiting advertising revenue. Ads are a service to our readers and our only means of revenue. However, we will follow all State and Federal laws, University policies and reserve the right to refuse advertising to anyone. We also reserve the right to control the content of the ads in regard to acceptable artwork and verbiage. 

The advertising policy is set by the Editor in Chief in consultation with the Advertising Director, and is approved by the Communications Authority Board. The advertisement must:

  • Not be for an unlawful product or service.
  • Not be deceitful or misleading.
  • Not serve primarily to advocate hate speech.
  • Not be obscene, as defined by current laws and statutes.
  • Not strongly disparage a competitor’s product.
  • Not be sexually explicit.
  • Carry the name of the organization or person who placed the ad if it is of a political nature.
  • Clearly indicate the advertiser’s name and service, if applicable.

ADULT ENTERTAINMENT/STORES

The Daily Aztec accepts advertisements from adult entertainment venues, but carefully screens artwork. Photos must be tasteful and meet prevailing standards. Photos must not be sexually explicit. Language describing male or female genitalia will not be accepted. The Advertising Director and the Editor in Chief must approve all ads.

PROFANITY

The Daily Aztec does not run ads with profanity or profane gestures.

ALCOHOL

The Daily Aztec accepts ads for bars, nightclubs and alcoholic beverages. However, The Daily Aztec follows all ABC laws regarding advertising of alcoholic beverages and will not advertise free alcohol or ads for drink specials priced less than $2. Food combinations that include alcohol cannot be advertised for less than $3.50. All ads must include a disclaimer, such as “don’t drink and drive” or “drink responsibly.” The Daily Aztec will not run advertisements for establishments in Mexico advertising alcohol or drink specials if the establishment’s principal business activity is the selling of alcoholic beverages.

SMOKE/GLASS SHOPS

The Daily Aztec accepts ads for Smoke/Glass Shops, but advertisements:

  • Must not use the word bong, marijuana, pot, weed or other synonyms for any illegal substance, or contain any form of the word “detox.”
  • Must not include any depiction of a bong or a marijuana leaf, in whole or in part.
  • Can only use “420” when it relates to a sale on April 20 and a dash or hyphen must separate the month and date in all references.
  • Must include models who are clothed and clothing cannot carry offensive logos, phrases or pictures.
  • Photos must be tasteful and meet prevailing standards. Photos must not be sexually explicit.
  • All ads must be approved by the Advertising Director and the Editor in Chief.

CANNABIS COLLECTIVES

The Daily Aztec does not accept ads for cannabis collectives.

INSERTS

The Advertising Director and the Editor in Chief must approve content of inserted ads. The insert will be no smaller than 8.5 inches by 5.5 inches in size (if larger, it must fold down to 8.5 x 11).

ONLINE ADVERTISERS

All online advertisements must comply with The Daily Aztec Advertising Policy. The Daily Aztec does not accept online ads from pornographic sites. All links from The Daily Aztec’s website to the advertiser’s website must meet Ad Policy regulations and the ads must link to the business listed on the contract. The advertiser’s website content must also comply with the Ad Policy.

BANNED ADVERTISERS

The Daily Aztec will maintain a list of banned advertisers, which will be available to the Communications Authority Board upon request.
