This coming week the San Diego State Greek community will be hosting Greek Week 2014. The week consists of events hosted by all the Panhellenic councils, Interfraternity councils, multicultural fraternity councils and sorority councils.
All of the councils are divided up and made into different teams for the week.
“The goals for this year’s Greek Week are to create awareness and fundraise money for the chosen philanthropy, unify the Greek community through participation of spirit and competitions throughout the week, and promote a positive image of Greek Life through competitions and community service projects,” SDSU Panhellenic Activities Director Michelle Jackson said.
The theme this year is “Made in the USA” and the event’s beneficiary is Photocharity, which is an organization that helps homeless teens in the San Diego area, Jackson said.
The week begins on March 21 at 12:30 p.m. with the opening ceremony at Montezuma Hall. There will be a relay race, balloon pop, piggyback race and tug of war during the event.
March 22-23 are the service days during which teams have to clean up the beach. On March 24 there is a poster and chalk competition followed by the change wars on March 25. March 26 is the fundraising day, and the last day, March 27, consists of a talent show and closing ceremonies Jackson said.
The 2013 Greek Week was able to raise $18,000 and performed over 200 community service hours, Jackson said.
“Greek Week helps the SDSU campus by getting the Greek community to come together and support the school with the fundraising for Photocharity,” Greek Life Activity Board Delegate Hannah Giffod said.
“As students of San Diego State University, everything we do reflects upon the campus,” SDSU Panhellenic President Sophia Huynh said. “Greek Week helps the SDSU campus by creating a positive image that the students at SDSU are dedicated to serving the community, which is evident in this year’s community-wide participation in a coastal beach clean-up.”
Huynh said Greek Week helps the community and bridge the gap between members of different chapters and organizations to create a cohesive and unified campus.
