The two San Diego mayoral candidates, Carl DeMaio and Bob Filner, have agreed on almost nothing since their campaigns began. However, Republican DeMaio and Democratic Rep. Filner appear to have similar opinions when it comes to medical marijuana.
Both candidates say, if they are elected mayor, they will support the use of medical marijuana.
An ordinance passed in 2011 by the City Council limited dispensaries to some commercial and industrial areas. The ordinance lasted three months because marijuana supporters held a signature drive complaining about the distance of the dispensaries.
“The challenge, is how do we regulate it?” DeMaio said at a recent debate. “That’s why I have been working with the medical marijuana community on a targeted, strict ordinance that would allow us to permit certain delivery services and dispensaries in the city of San Diego.”
Activists have conflicting views on DeMaio’s stance, including Eugene Davidovich, a member of San Diego’s Americans for Safe Access and lobbier on the issue said, “he is the biggest opponent to medical cannabis regulations.”
Filner did not approve of the ordinance in 2011 because he felt there were too many barriers restricting patients from receiving their medicine.
“I want to make sure it’s available for those who are suffering from illness, but that neighbors are protected, kids are protected from any use or recreational use,” Filner said during a debate.
