Coming off an exhilarating win against cross town rival University of San Diego, the San Diego State volleyball team traveled to Albuquerque, N.M. to face the Lobos. With the Mountain West championship title in sight the Aztecs clinched a crucial win against New Mexico in a nail-biting three set game (26-24, 29-27,25-16).
Defeating the Lobos marks the Aztecs’ eleventh straight win this season. Senior middle blocker Andrea Hannasch left everything on the court leading SDSU with 13 kills and two service aces. Junior middle blocker Emily Harris trailed close behind Hannasch with nine kills and three blocks. Junior setter Johnna Fouch was determined to keep the dream of being a conference champion alive as she recorded 39 assists and 10 digs, bringing her season total to an impressive 983 assists. This marks Fouch’s tenth double-double this season and her fifth within the last six matches.
New Mexico senior middle blocker Chantale Riddle, who leads the Mountain West in kills, led the Lobos with 14 kills, four digs, and three blocks in the game. SDSU hit .204 in the win while New Mexico hit .097.
has had an incredible season, going undefeated on Aztec Court (13-0), 7-4 on the road, and 12-3 in conference play. Senior libero Kristi Jackels showed her veteran leadership on the court by grabbing a team high 461 digs in her final season as an Aztec. Hannasch is leading the team with an impressive 336 kills in the stat column this season.
The Aztecs will bring their regular season to a close this Tuesday against Nevada in Peterson Gym. The final home court showdown for the Aztecs is set for 7 p.m. at Aztec Court. If SDSU defeats the Wolf Pack they could secure at least a share of the Mountain West title with Colorado State (11-3 MW).
Nevada is coming to Montezuma Mesa with a conference record of 1-14 and an overall record of 4-24. The Wolf Pack is also entering Peterson Gym following a recent three set loss against the New Mexico Lobos.
