A playoff pays off for SDSU golfer

And the first four out at the Torrey Pines Buick Invitational could be: Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, Greg Norman and Mike Samoles.

Most of the gallery at Torrey Pines this coming February won’t recognize Samoles; they probably haven’t even heard of him, but that’s OK by him.

“I’d like to play with Tiger Woods or somebody,” the San Diego State junior told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “It really doesn’t matter. I’m so happy; I’ll be playing at home in front of my friends. I can’t believe it.”

Samoles, a graduate of Patrick Henry High in San Diego and a member of the Aztec golf team, grabbed one of two available spots in the Buick Invitational at the 13th annual Amateur Qualifying Tournament at Torrey Pines Dec. 6.

It took a full round of golf and then some before Samoles could win the tournament. After the first 18 holes, Samoles was tied with three other players at 1-under-par 71 with one spot left in the tournament.

John Ray Leary, a 16-year-old from Culver City, Calif., won the first berth by shooting for par on the first playoff hole.

On the second playoff hole, Samoles sank a 35-foot putt to beat out Brian Bazzel and Jeffrey McGraw for the last berth.

“I can’t even think right now,” Samoles said. “It feels like a dream.”

As an added benefit, Samoles will be getting some pretty spiffy treatment from his SDSU teammates. The Aztecs will be club cleaners for the tournament, held from Feb. 3-9.

“I don’t care about them cleaning my clubs,” Samoles said. “All I care is that I’ll be inside the ropes.”
