Aztecs feast on Falcons

Senior linebacker Sam Lawanson summed up the San Diego State football team’s attitude about having to play on Thanksgiving Day.

About Air Force’s refusal to play on Friday, Oct. 4, because, as Falcons head coach Fisher DeBerry said, having to get ready in six days instead of the normal seven, coupled with SDSU’s bye week preceding the game, was a competitive disadvantage for his cadets.

About Air Force having it’s third bye week of the season.

About the Aztecs playing their fifth game in 25 days.

And about having to prepare for the wishbone, an offense most members of SDSU’s defense had never seen.

That’s right. The maligned SDSU (8-3) defense had three practice days to prepare for the Falcons’ deadly wishbone attack, one that came in chewing up 338 yards per game on the ground. Only defending national champion Nebraska had run for more yards.

The result a 28-23 Aztecs victory in front of 18,353 loyal fans at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
