Aztecs update:After suffering its first let-down of the season atthe Stanford Invitational, San Diego State’s A-team will have theweekend off to prepare for the UNLV Invitational next Saturday. Butwhile the A-team will be training, the B-team will be in a tri-teamcompetition this weekend at UC Irvine. The event gives an opportunityfor runners to work on improving their times to see where they stackup against their local counterparts. SDSU is looking for solidperformances from their top three; Maria Moreno, Amanda Vielbaum andErin Duterte. Duterte’s progress has been slowed this season by shininjuries, but assistant coach Jennifer Nanista said when healthy thefreshman is capable of running at the level of Buffy Brown. Brown hasconsistently finished in the 19-minute range this year and wasrecently promoted to the A-team. Nanista said she would also like tosee improvement from Julie Amster and Angie Fitzpatrick.
Quotable: Nanista on the A-team: “We can’t rest on our laurels nowthat we have won a meet. Now teams will be gunning for us so we haveto step up even further than before. If you want to build a winningtradition, you have to keep your intensity up all the time.”
Opponents Update: The Aztecs will have the opportunity to seewhere they stack up depth-wise to a high-caliber team. UC Irvine’sA-team has been ranked in the Top-25 for much of the season.
