Springtime musical frolics are in full swing, with a slew of album announcements, large and small as well as many kick-off tours. The spring and summer concert calendar is filling fast with festivals and local shows.
Remember Garbage? Yes, the ‘90s alternative rockers. The band has announced tour dates for the spring and summer. The tour begins April 9 in Los Angeles, traveling throughout the western United States and the Eastern Seaboard before heading to Europe for summer festivals. Garbage also has a new album set to release May 15 titled “Not Your Kind of People.”
Silversun Pickups announced it will release its third album on May 8, titled “Neck of the Woods.” While no formal tour details have been announced, the band will be making appearances at this year’s Sasquatch! Music Festival and Edgefest in support of the new album.
More details on Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros’ newest album have been released. “Here” will arrive May 29 via Community Music / Vagrant Records. The band will also be hosting a unique performance with members of last year’s Railroad Revival Tour, Mumford & Sons and Old Crow Medicine Show this Saturday at South by Southwest in support of its tour documentary “Big Easy Express.”
In “odd couple” news this week, it was announced that the Beach Boys will make a stop in San Diego for its 50th Anniversary Tour. The iconic band will play at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre on May 25, with an opening performance by indie rock band Foster The People. The bands have musical history, both appearing in a collaborative Grammy performance. Tickets go on sale March 17, costing between $32.50 and $112.25.
Nirvana fans will be pleased to hear cult favorite The Melvan was listed on an eBay auction. The Melvan, once owned and loved by Kurt Cobain, is a 1972 Dodge Sportsman Royal Van and was the epitome of grunge automobiling as an ode to The Melvins. The auction, which ended March 13, reached just one cent short of $100,000.
SXSW is in full swing this week and has fans and bands alike arriving in droves to Austin, Texas. A few San Diego bands, The Heavy Guilt and Little Hurricane will be making appearances in the “live music capital of the world” this weekend.
Listed as shows never to miss ever, Band of Skulls and We Are Augustines will be playing The Griffin together April 18. For those without Coachella Valley Music and Arts Annual Festival tickets, occurring in the vast void between the two festival weekends is a chance to catch some of the talent hitting the polo fields.
