The San Diego State women’s tennis team fell short at the Mountain West Championships, which were held in Fresno last weekend. The third-seeded Aztecs lost to No. 2 University of New Mexico in the semifinals after beating San Jose State in the first round.
The first-round match against No. 6 SJSU was originally scheduled for Friday afternoon, but inclement weather postponed it to Saturday morning, forcing SDSU to play two matches in the span of 9 1/2 hours.
The Aztecs didn’t let the postponement hamper their quest for an 11th conference championship under head coach Peter Mattera, as they swept aside the Spartans by a score of 4-2. Sophomore Tami Nguyen’s match was the first to finish; she took down senior Sabastiani Leon Chao 6-4, 6-1.
Senior Laura Antoñana Iriarte, who recently grabbed Mountain West Player of the Year honors, took down freshman Marie Clocker in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Isabelle Hoorn defeated sophomore Justine Deleval 6-3, 6-2, and sophomore Dora Somoracz needed a third set to squeak by junior Jessica Willett 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
SDSU couldn’t carry the momentum into the semifnals where they were beaten by UNM 4-2. The Aztecs failed to capture the doubles point when Somoracz and junior Hailey Johnson were bested by the Lobos duo of senior Michaela Bezdickova and freshman Lizette Blankers 8-6. SDSU lost the No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches before junior Kristin Buth, who was named on the conference all-singles team, defeated Blankers in singles 7-5, 6-1. Nguyen took down UNM’s freshman Meredith Hopson 6-2, 7-5 to bring the overall score to 3-2 in favor of the Lobos.
However, the Aztecs were sent packing when Hoorn was beaten 6-4, 6-2 by freshman Rachana Bhat, ending a streak of four straight winning seasons for SDSU.
The Aztecs were not selected for the NCAA Championships, which are being held May 15-26 in Athens, Ga. So it will be back to the drawing board for the 2014-2015 season.
