The San Diego State swim team showed its strengths this weekend as it beat out its competition in Nashville.
The Aztecs won 10 of 14 events in their first meet on Friday against the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Vanderbilt University and Campbell University. They also won 11 of the 13 events on Saturday, where they competed against only Arkansas at Little Rock and Vanderbilt.
The team currently has a 6-0 record for the season.
The meet began Friday with Aztec sophomore Anika Apostalon, freshman Cecilia Zaccarelli, senior Loreen Whitfield and junior Whitney Weisz winning the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 1:43.76.
San Diego State also took second in this event, with a team comprised of senior Chelsea Bailey, junior Laura Day, freshman Summer Harrison and junior Taylor Johnson finishing only a second behind.
The entire team came out strong with Apostalon winning the 100-meter backstroke and the 100-meter freestyle while junior Natilee Ruiz took the 200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter backstroke. Sophomore Frida Berggren managed to win in both the 200-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley.
The team stayed strong on the second day. Once again the team started by winning the medley, this time the 400 meter, which was swam by Apostalon, Day, Harrison and Bailey.
“We are all sore and tired,” Bailey said. “So to swim as well as we did is exciting.”
Apostalon won three more individual events in the second day, taking first in the 50-meter freestyle, 50-meter butterfly and 100-meter individual medley.
Not to be outdone, Bailey placed first in the 50-meter backstroke and the 100-meter backstroke, as well as being a part of the 200-meter freestyle medley team that took the final event.
Senior Dana Michaels, Day, Ruiz and Berggren all also had first place finishes in individual events on Saturday.
The team showed they were strong all around with Freshman Summer Harrison getting her first ever first-place finish as an Aztec by winning the 100-meter butterfly on Friday.
The swim team finished strong last year and hopes to use that momentum to build on this year.
“We have a lot of depth and talent in this group of girls and are excited to compete again,” Bailey said.
The next meet for the Aztecs will be held at the Aztec Aquaplex against the University of Hawaii at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24.
