There are dozens of resources for certain majors to get a head start in their career field of choice, but the Counseling and Social Change Club is one organization that can contribute to any career field a student chooses.
Founded in spring 2015, the Counseling and Social Change Club focuses on creating cultural competency and enforcing ideals based upon helping others in need.
“Growing up in a Third World country like me, I grew up around people who didn’t cater to others who weren’t familiar with our community,” club President Rachelle Lim said. “I wanted to be more open-minded and promote change in our world from a very young age. This club is also a chance for anybody to come out of their comfort zones. Nobody knows what their potential is unless they put themselves out there.”
Pairing with psychology and sociology majors, the CSCC focuses on building connections and resources for those interested in that particular field. It’s an organization that creates a judgement-free space in the name of educating the public on ways to handle cultural differences.
The CSCC isn’t exclusive to certain majors. This organization isn’t just for those looking to work in a specific career, either. In any field, individuals must be understanding of constant societal change, and this club provides the resources to create members who know how to work with those with different perspectives.
“The big picture is to help within a profession by creating educated individuals,” CSCC Treasurer Carolina Mozee said. “We’ve all been through obstacles, and we’re real people. A lot of people have helped me to get where I am today. I want to give others that same benefit.”
The CSCC not only promotes cultural competency but also seeks to improve the community through its resources. Members are taught to become change agents in society and empower them to create a better comradery between individuals.
CSCC is open all year to anybody who is interested. It’s also open to faculty members, neighboring colleges or even individuals who just want to benefit from the club’s offerings. Meetings are currently held Tuesday afternoons from 3-4 p.m. in the Legacy Suite of the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.
