Ryo’s Picks:
Julianna Barwick at Luce Loft
Experimental artist Julianna Barwick is recommended for those looking for a relaxed musical evening. Accompanied by strings and electronic drones, Barwick builds her music live by looping and layering her own voice. The result is something you might hear in an echo chamber with countless voices filling the room. She’s currently touring for her excellent new album “Nepenthe” and performing a show this Saturday at the Luce Loft. Mark McGuire, formerly from the group Emeralds, will be the supporting act. For a sample of Barwick’s live shows, check out her performance of the song “One Half” for WNYC’s Soundcheck program. In a cozy and intimate venue, such as Luce Loft, Barwick’s music should sound right at home in San Diego.
Craftlab Gallery Closing Reception:
This Sunday, Oceanside’s Craftlab Gallery is ending its exhibition “Magical Realism, Moments of Metal and Riding Shotgun.” The exhibition is a series of paintings, photographs and installation art by four artists: Margaret Chiaro, Andrea Gruber Matthies, Melissa Stager and Marta Hotell. For the final day, Craftlab is hosting a closing reception with a number of exciting evening events. For the aspiring artists, there will be a live art demo for metal work, sculpting and more. Live music will be also provided by The Gift Machine. The event is from 3 to 8 p.m and the admission is free. Celebrate a fun evening with great artists and check out the exhibition at Craftlab Gallery before it’s gone.
