The high-energy brand of dance music heard at popular raves may not appeal to every dance music fan. For those looking for a smooth alternative, don’t fret. On Friday, April 18, house music duo Classixx will play at nightclub Bang Bang in Downtown San Diego.
Classixx consists of two producers, Michael David and Tyler Blake. The duo’s first single, “I’ll Get You” from 2009, stands as a defining song that represents their unique sound. For its signature style, the duo favors a warmer, sleeker sound that draws from early 80s house and synthpop. Warm retro synthesizers and rubbery bass lines in “I’ll Get You” should satisfy dance music fans looking for a friendly groove.
In May 2013, Classixx released its debut album “Hanging Gardens.” The record finds the duo expanding its delightful sound into a diverse range of styles. Classixx tries out an edgier dance sound in “Rhythm Santa Clara,” while the two craft a blissful instrumental in “A Fax from the Beach.”
Out of all the songs in “Hanging Gardens,” the lead single “All You’re Waiting For” sticks out as the highlight. For the single, Classixx steps out from its traditional dance beats into fully developed dance-pop. The synths shine bright as ever in the sun-soaked song, and featured singer Nancy Whang contributes an iconic vocal performance.
Bang Bang opens at 10 p.m. and admission is $10. For the San Diego gig, Classixx will play a DJ set instead of a live performance. For a preview of the duo’s taste behind the decks, check out their recent mix for the “Diplo and Friends” show on BBC Radio 1. In the one-hour mix, Classixx spins tropical, funky tracks similar to the songs in “Hanging Gardens.”
For those looking for a different kind of dance, Classixx provides a smoother touch of house music for a great Friday night.
