Aztecs update: First baseman Chad Chop was named the firstMountain West Conference player of the week. The sophomore hit .400with six RBIs, six runs scored, two doubles and three walks in fivegames last week. Freshman Taber Lee hit .500 on the trip with twodoubles and five RBIs. Fellow frosh Garrett Cook hit .455 over theweekend. So far this season SDSU’s team ERA is 3.51 — far less thanlast year’s 6.36. Freshman Chris Hartshorn, senior Jeremy Cook andsophomore Chris Dunwell are the leading candidates to be on the hillfor the Aztecs this series. Closer Rory Shortell was impressive inshort relief, allowing only two hits and zero runs in threeappearances.

Cowboys update: OSU opens the season trying to make the CollegeWorld Series for the 21st time. The Cowboys figure to start MattSmith in the opener. Last year, the preseason All-American was 9-6with a 3.09 ERA and 144 strikeouts. Outfielder Carlos Gautreaux (.361batting average, 11 doubles, 32 RBIs in 1999) and catcher Ryan Budde(.275, 18 doubles and 39 RBIs) lead the way offensively.
