RAIN AFFECTS ATHLETIC SCHEDULING
Two San Diego State games were cancelled this past weekend because of soggy weather. Both the men’s tennis team’s match at Arizona and the softball team’s contest against Kansas at the Hawaii Tournament – scheduled for Sunday – were rained out. According to the SDSU athletics department’s media relations, the men’s tennis game is not likely to be rescheduled, but it hasn’t been taken off the official schedule and still has a slight chance of being played.
It has yet to be announced whether the softball team will reschedule its game against the Jayhawks.
In addition to the rained-out contests, the men’s tennis team has changed venues for its matchup with Princeton on March 23.
Head coach Gene Carswell said the team will move from the Aztec Tennis Center to the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club for the match scheduled at 1:30 p.m.
The Aztecs (5-5), winners of two of their last three games, look to hold off the Tigers and then go on to battle their cross-town rivals, USD, on Saturday.
McDONALD’S GAME HEADS TO COX AREA
The 29th annual Boys and fifth annual Girls McDonald’s All American High School Basketball Game will be played on March 29 at Cox Arena.
The game will feature the best high school basketball players from around the nation, including San Diego area native and La Costa Canyon High School star Chase Buddinger.
On March 27, the Powerade Jam Fest will take place, featuring the slam dunk, three-point and team ball competitions held from 7 to 9 p.m. at Peterson Gym.
The girls game will be held at 4:30 p.m. March 29, and the boys game will follow at 7 p.m.
MARCH MADNESS COMES TO SAN DIEGO
Last Thursday and Saturday, Cox Arena played host to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001. The seventh-seed Marquette Golden Eagles played the 10th-seed Alabama Crimson Tide on Thursday in a contest that featured a 31-point performance by senior Crimson Tide forward Jean Felix and a thrilling comeback by the Golden Eagles in the second half, though Alabama held on to win 90-85.
The game, which was scheduled to begin at 11:40 a.m., was delayed 70 minutes because of a bomb scare at Cox Arena.
Later that day, Illinois defeated Air Force 78-69 and Washington moved on after beating Utah State 75-61, while the second-seed UCLA Bruins played the 15th-seed Belmont Bruins in a lopsided contest winning a 78-44 victory.
After Thursday’s “Battle of the Bruins,” with the Tournament whittled down to 32, UCLA played Alabama on Saturday in an intense second-round game that featured many ups and down before the Bruins eventually pulled out the 62-59 win.
Washington also defeated Illinois 67-64 to move on to the Sweet 16.
