By Nicole Mehta, Staff Writer The San Diego State women’s soccer team gave the city something to talk about this weekend. Coming off two consecutive losses, the Aztecs had the daunting task of kicking off its conference schedule on the road against the Mountain West’s top two teams: Brigham Young and Utah. Surprising many soccer fans, SDSU managed to come back home with two ties under its belt. “BY U has been the conference champion for the past few years, and Utah had only one loss in conference in the past four years,” head coach Michael Giuliano said. “This was a big weekend for us.” The Aztecs (3-6-5, 0-0-2) played their first conference game against BYU (4-7-3, 0-0-1) last Thursday. Utilizing Giuliano’s “full-court press” defense, the team shut the Cougars down in an intense double-overtime battle. Junior Alexis Solovij, who played forward for most of the season, was moved back to sweeper, which worked out great for the Aztecs. Senior goalkeeper Sophia Perez continued her stellar performance, making three saves for the game. Although SDSU is still struggling to get on the scoreboard, the team is taking some good shots. Senior forward Courtney Burns, sophomore midfielder Jen Klunder and freshman forward Lisa Nielsen led the team against the Cougars with two shots apiece. BYU out-shot the Aztecs 11-9 for the game, but still ended up in a 0-0 tie, which is credible to the SDSU defense. The Aztecs kept up their intense defensive effort against Utah (7-4-2, 0-1-1) and ended up in yet another 0-0 double-overtime tie. This time, the teams were even with attempted shots and Utah held only a small lead in corner kicks. Solovij, junior defender Amanda Swiader and senior defender Noelle Jouglet were the heart of the team’s defense, holding the Utes to four shots on goal. However, the SDSU scoring drought continued. “This was the best offensive game we’ve played all year,” Giuliano said. “We were right there the whole game. We were really unlucky not to score in the second overtime. We had some great opportunities, but we just could not put the ball in the net.” According to Giuliano, senior Gina Salinas played her best game of the season, leading the Aztecs with three shots. Junior defender Ashley Cooper made two attempts and Jouglet, Swiader, Nielsen and senior midfielder Jessica Korpela had one each. Overall, the team is happy with its performance against the two MWC powerhouses. After playing the two toughest teams on the road and coming back with ties, SDSU has all the momentum it needs going into its next conference game. “The rest of our conference 10 we can just figure out a way to score, we can legitimately think and dream of a conference championship.”
