Winning $1 million is only a mouse click away. At least that’swhat one Web site wants voters to think.
The site, www.wintheelection.com,is designed to offer $1 million to anyone who can guess the resultsof the Election 2000.
“Honestly, it’s not just about the money,” said Wheatleigh Dunham,Web designer and marketing director at On-Line Design. “It is moreabout getting involved, and supporting your candidates and issues.”
One million dollars will be awarded to anyone over 18 who cancorrectly identify the winner of the presidential election, the 34U.S. senatorial races and the winner of each 11 state gubernatorialraces. Visitors can guess as many times as they want.
Hector Olguin, a television, film and new media senior, said he isready to put in his guess.
“This seems like a good way to get people involved with the votingprocess,” Olguin said. “The money is just a bonus, I hope I can win.”
The contest also gives voters another chance at some money.Another game features a $10,000 prize to whomever picks the winner ofthe presidential race and comes closest to guessing the exact popularvote.
The winner(s) will be notified via e-mail by the end of electionday, Nov. 7. The grand prize will be paid in 20 annual payments inthe amount of $50,000. In the event of a tie, the prize money will beequally distributed among winners.
Dunham said he hopes younger voters, who typically have lowerturnout during elections, will have more of an incentive to vote inthe elections now that they can win $1 million for giving theiropinion.
“There are a lot of students who feel strong about various issuessuch as abortion and gun control,” Dunham said. “The Web site is justanother place to familiarize yourself with the candidates andissues.”
In the past two weeks, more than half a million people have votedon the sight, and administrators expect even more people will log onas the presidential race continues, he said.
