Six Tacomas stolen from campus
In the past two weeks, six Toyota Tacomas have been stolen from San Diego State’s parking structures. Several more have been burglarized in what were most likely attempts to steal more trucks, University Police Lt. Robert McManus said.
The most recent cases took place on Wednesday, when four Tacomas were taken from campus and one more was broken into.
“Right now Toyota Tacomas are the hot item,” McManus said. “I assume that at least three of the four (stolen trucks) belong to students.”
The first theft, a silver Tacoma, took place between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on the first level of Parking Structure 2, located on the south side of campus.
A green, 2003 Tacoma was also taken Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 1:05 p.m. on the seventh level of PS 4, on the west side of campus.
Later that day, two other vehicles, a silver and a red Tacoma, were taken from Parking Lot X, on the northwest side of campus.
Finally, between 10 p.m. on April 3 and 10:30 a.m. last Thursday, there was an attempted theft of a silver Tacoma on the second level of PS 5, on the southwest side of campus.
According to police reports, several eyewitnesses said the group of unidentified men who committed the auto thefts were using some kind of powerdrill to pierce the lock and then pull out the ignition, McManus said.
“(The witnesses) said ‘Yeah, I saw somebody doing it… but I didn’t want to make an assumption (and report it),” McManus said. “If you think it’s suspicious, it’s suspicious. Please give us a call.
“The important thing is, please give us a call when you see somebody drilling a door lock.”
Police said they think the Toyotas are being taken for parts or are being shipped out of the United States.
Saturns become target for car theft
Two Saturns were stolen from campus last week.
A female student’s gold, 1996 Saturn was taken between 11 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. Thursday from the first level of PS 3, located on the south east side of campus.
Between 6 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday, a female student’s red Saturn was burglarized and moved from one side of Parking Lot C, located on the northwest side of campus, to the other side. When the car owner called University Police at 7:15 a.m. on Sunday, she reported that her stereo and CDs were stolen, according to the police report.
“Technically, it was an auto theft,” McManus said.
More women report sexual assault
Detectives are following up on the case of a man who has been reported by a few women in the College Area to have sexually assaulted them by rubbing their feet on his groin area.
McManus said that after an article was printed in The Daily Aztec last week about the reported foot-fetish sex offender, other women have come forward and have said they had similar experiences to the woman in the article.
One woman reported being assaulted in late March in the east alley of the 5100 block of College Avenue.
Each woman described the man as a Hispanic male in his 20s, who is about 5 feet 8 inches tall, approximately 160 pounds, has short dark hair, a muscular build and rides a black and red bicycle.
“This provided us with a little more information,” McManus said. “We appreciate that.”
