Potential Master Plan to include parking and a hotel
The Campus Master Plan will be presented to the California State University Board of Trustees on Nov. 13 and 14, said Tyler Sherer, director of community relations and special projects for San Diego State marketing and communication. This is nearly two months past the initial review originally scheduled for this week.
Sherer presented the plan, which would increase student enrollment by 40 percent between now and 2027, to the council last Wednesday. If approved, more construction of on-campus housing would allow approximately 35 percent of students to live within walking distance to SDSU, which may eliminate some of the current traffic concerns. More parking structures, a university conference center and an Alvarado campus and hotel, which would be used by the Hospitality and Tourism Management program, are also included in the plan.
Homecoming court chosen
Joy Salvatin, College of Engineering representative and Richard Pelayo, Andres Bonifiacio Samahan representative, were voted by council members to represent Associated Students at SDSU’s homecoming.
Homecoming week is Oct. 15-20, and will culminate in the homecoming football game at Qualcomm Stadium, where the Aztecs will play New Mexico.
Web crashing update
A proposed online program, that would make the crashing process simpler, is on hold until security concerns are met. Upgrades to the system will not be finished anytime soon, and the program will not be in use until at least Fall 2008, according to Michael Matthews, vice president of university affairs.
Security responding to theft issues at Aztec Center
Executive Director Dan Cornthwaite reported that additional security measures will be taken at Aztec Center in response to recent theft occurring at the loading dock there. There were also reports that transients have been sleeping in the restrooms.
A new name for Cox Arena?
In January 2009, Cox Communications’ 11-year contract for the naming rights to Cox Arena will run out. A value is being placed on the naming rights, and it is expected to be much higher than the current sponsorship from Cox. Should Cox decide to not renew the deal, bidding will begin on this sponsorship opportunity.
